From 10.8 lbs to 43 lbs

Henry Farmer just turned 5.
An interview with the birthday boy:
What makes you happy?  "That my friends like me."
What is your favorite animal?  "Zebra."
What is your favorite things to eat?  "Meatballs."  [And I would add: buttered noodles, eggs, chicken nuggets, clementines, pears, broccoli, pretzels and nutella & peanut butter.]
What is your least favorite thing to eat?  "Stinky cheese." [anything creamy such as cottage cheese, ranch dressing, sour cream, mayo, yogurt, cream cheese, pudding]
What is your favorite thing to do?  "Have parties."  [play with stuffed animals, puzzles, play games on my ipod, sing]
What is your favorite TV show?  "Phineas and Ferb."  [Scooby Doo, Little Einsteins]
What is your favorite color?  "Orange."  [just recently changed from Pink]
What is your favorite song?  "Silent Night."  [changes every week.  It's now the Star Spangled Banner, of which he knows every word]
Who is your best friend?  "Charlie McConkie."
What do you like to do with Daddy?  "Wrestle."
What do your want to be when you grow up?  "A Pirate."

I told my kids that they could have a birthday party with friends at age 5, 8, 12, and 16.  I hate throwing birthday parties.  So we had a birthday party with 7 kids during one of my busiest weekends ever.  I ordered a Scooby Doo cake from the bakery and let myself off that guilty hook, thank you very much.

Henry loved it and it actually tasted pretty good:  chocolate with raspberry filling.

He got a Razor scooter from mom and dad before church (his birthday was Sunday, the 8th).

And we took him to Build-a-Bear.  I know this is a bit trashy so let me explain:  He had seen this store when we were at the mall (also a little trashy) Christmas shopping and was mesmerized.  He loves stuffed animals and actually plays with them.  I told him we could probably come here for his birthday present.  At first he chose a Smurf (seriously?), but I talked him into his second choice, Alvin the Chipmunk.  Alvin wasn't as obnoxious-looking.
Let me tell you, that place is all about the up-charge.  "Do you want fries with that?"  You can't get out of there for under $40. We got jeans, shoes and glasses ("'Cuz I wear glasses, too Mom."  How could I refuse?).  But that kid loved every minute.  Alvin has been to school for show-n-tell; to Grandma's for playing; in bed (without his clothes on because you "don't sleep in clothes"); and on the couch for some TV-watching.  It was worth every penny for this big, big boy.

I feel more sentimental about this birthday than any others.  Kindergarten just around the corner? It's killing me softly.  My fat, fat baby (10.8 lbs!!) is growing up.  He's our resident singer, comedian, and potty-talker.  He's a sore loser at games, a cuddly lover, and he loves rock and roll music.
I (and our family) need and love him.

Super boy! I hated it when my boys turned 5, it was like they no longer needed me...a mission was right around the corner! I'm with you on the whole birthday party thing. Luckily my kids aren't so much into cakes anyway, pressure is off. Have fun in Disneyland, try Ride Makerz in Downtown Disney if your boys are into cars, remote ones at that! I LOVED it!!

That Henry is such a special boy. 5 really is a heartbreaker. Especially for a baby boy! :( Love that sweet kid.

P.s. Eliza asked me the other day if she could marry him. (She's been mad at me for months because I told her she couldn't marry her boy cousins. When she got the Henry idea, all was good.)

Cute Henry. Please tell him Tate says Happy Birthday and thinks it's cool they both have January ones. This 5th birthday thing is awful. I'm usually not one of those moms that is overly sad when they're kid turns another year, but I'll admit- I've shed real tears (more than once!) about Tate turning 5.
