We went to southeast Idaho for Memorial Day.
Landon grew up in Bone, Iona, and Rexburg.
His mom's family lived, and still lives, in Iona.
These are some
Rockwood (Landon's mom's maiden name) great-grandkids at the Iona City cemetery. (Iona is a few miles east of Idaho Falls.)
Landon's maternal grandparents. Bonita is his mom.
Ditch jumping.
When Bonita was a little girl, her family would move up into the hills east of Iona so her dad could farm. The area is called Bone; it's not populated enough to be called a town.
This is the tiny cabin that she lived in; no electricity or running water.
The property is still in the family and the cabin has been uninhabited for years. It's terrifyingly derelict.
Half of the cabin is caved in.
An old rusty combine sitting in the field.
When Landon was about 5 years old, his dad had a hankering to build a solar-powered house up in the hills. So he did. The Farmers lived there for about 5 years. In the picture below, you'll see the long driveway and the house they lived in is back in the trees.
They couldn't drive their car to the house during the winter; they had to park about 2 miles down the dirt road and drive snowmobiles and a snow cat to the house. Landon learned to drive a snowmobile at about age 7.
Here's the Bone Store. It's about a mile from Landon's house. He and his siblings would walk down to the store to buy candy and Fanta Orange in a glass bottles.
Oh, man was his upbringing so different from mine!
Landon loved showing our boys where he grew up. It actually gave both of us a wish for a more countrified life.
