Ethan has been in elementary school for 2 years now and I've never, not once, volunteered in his classroom. The prospect of pawning off Henry to a neighbor and going to spend time with strangers' children is less than appealing to me. Especially during the kindergarten year where they're only gone from home for just under 3 hours. I realize this makes me sound selfish; I mean, what kind of mother isn't just anxious to spend more time with their child?
So seeing as how my "Mother of the Year" crown is tarnished and tilting a bit, I signed up to drive and chaperone for a 1st grade field trip to Red Butte Gardens. As you can see, it was a wet, soggy, muddy day herding other people's children.
All in all it wasn't a miserable day; the gardens are spectacular, the information from the guide was awesome and interesting to both kids and adults. I just wish the weather had been a bit more conducive to spending 2 hours outside and I feel bad for the neighbor who had Henry for 3 1/2 hours! I owe her big.
Even though the title of this post is a bit tongue-in-cheek, it was fun to see Ethan in his class environment. I loved hearing him recount the field trip to his dad at dinner: "We got to eat mustard greens (they were spicy like horseradish), and chives, and a little purple flower that it's OK to eat. And we ate the roots, stem, and leaves of a mung bean!" (His obvious take-away was the edible plants at Red Butte.)
Perhaps it will be easier and more desirable to volunteer once Henry is actually in school. Please don't hold me to it.

So....my nightstand looks exactly like yours. I'm always having to shift everything slightly so they don't topple over.
AND- I think I've volunteered ONCE in 5 years until this year when I was drafted as Co-Room Mother for Abby's class. I figured it was about time for me. But not before. And I have no guilt about it. I never could understand the concept of having someone else tend my kids so i could go volunteer. That's just me, though. And apparently you. =)
So glad you have a blog!
Mother. Of. The. Year. You've officially earned it! Now that you've volunteered in the rain, I'm pretty sure you've got a free pass for 3 more years.
And your blog makes me all sorts of happy. Hooray!
