I tried something new a few nights ago: homemade tortillas. We love the raw tortillas from Costco and when I pulled them out of the fridge, there were little mold spots all over. I had to act fast. My sister, Wendy, makes homemade tortillas all the time so I knew it was possible. And I had just purchased a new cookbook from Costco (I believe happiness can be bought: at Costco) that had a recipe for homemade tortillas. They were super easy and fast, but they sort of tasted like fried pie dough (I say that like it's a bad thing). The ingredients are the same as pie dough: shortening, water, flour, salt (unless you add vodka to your pie dough, which I do. I'm obviously in the camp of "I-Use-Alcohol-In-My-Cooking", what's it to ya?), so I shouldn't have been surprised at the taste. Rolling them out in a perfect circle was harder than Cafe Rio makes it look. We had lots of odd shapes, which turned out to be a fun game at dinner: I've got South America! Mine looks like Abraham Lincoln!
I'll keep buying the raw tortillas at Costco, but I'll keep looking for a better homemade recipe to use in a pinch. By the way, the new cookbook I purchased was Our Best Bites: Mormon Moms in the Kitchen. Verdict is still out.

We just made our first tortillas, too! Ours looked exactly like yours. How in the world does one form a perfect circle?? This I want to know...
